In many ways, Jules Verne's "extraordinary voyages" novels paved the way for science-fiction in the next century. Immensely popular then and now, his most famous novels are science-fiction in a very literal sense, in that they have a strongly pedagogical element in service to a fictional adventure taking place in the modern day (although at the same time Verne frequently imparts a sense of moral imperative to his stories). The below links lead to full-length, chapter by chapter analyses of Verne novels on this site.
Journey To the Centre of the Earth (1864)
